FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

What to expect during an Initial Consultation?

For Children...
The initial consultation will last at least 1 hour. We strongly advise that both parents participate in the initial consultation, as well as the child.  Luciana will review your child’s history, conduct a nutritional physical examination, observe your child’s interactions, as well as performing a variety of diagnostic techniques.  She will present and discussed a detailed treatment plan for the child according to his/her individual needs.

For Adults...
The initial office consultation will last at least 1 hour.  Luciana will conduct a detailed review of the individual’s history and current health care concerns.  She will also perform a variety of diagnostic techniques.  Luciana will discussed a plan of treatment based on the individual's diagnosis, as well as recommendations such as herbal supplementation, dietary modifications and/or lifestyle changes.

Everyone must fill out the consent forms and assessment forms prior to the initial appointment.  The forms will be faxed or emailed after the initial appointment is scheduled.

How often are the follow-up appointments?

It varies from according to each individual's needs.  Follow-up consultations will occur as frequently as needed, but generally take place every 1 to 3 months.  Although follow-up consults can be done by phone or E-visit, everyone must have a face to face consult at least every 6 months.
Almost everyone who receives acupuncture will need a series of treatments to get good results. The number of acupuncture sessions needed depends upon the nature and severity of the symptoms, and how long they have been present. Initial acupuncture sessions are scheduled as often as three times per week or as seldom as once a week.  As symptoms improve, fewer visits are needed.

Is your practice covered by insurance?

We are currently working on applying to several insurance networks, but currently we are considered an out of network provider.  It is your responsibility to contact your insurance company before committing to our program to determine the exact policies of your insurance company. We will, of course, with your permission, provide all of the documentation required by your insurer. Please note that if you choose to submit our invoices to your insurance company for reimbursement, telephone consults are not generally covered by insurance.

Can children receive acupuncture?

While kids and needles do not usually peacefully coexist, acupuncture in children may not be as frightening for them as it sounds.  Luciana uses a variety of techniques to help children become comfortable with the idea of the needles.  She may demonstrate the therapy on a stuffed animal, the child's parents, or even her own hand to show children what to expect during the acupuncture session.  There is a big difference between the acupuncture needles and a typical injection or intravenous needle.  Acupuncture needles are smaller and not hollow so they do not rip the skin like typical needles. It is relatively painless if done by a trained practitioner. Children are usually surprised at how little discomfort they actually feel.
Acupuncture is safe for kids and now there is current research to support this assertion!  As it states in the Official Journal of The American Academy of Pediatrics: "Of the AEs associated with pediatric needle acupuncture, a majority of them were mild in severity. Many of the serious AEs might have been caused by substandard practice. Our results support those from adult studies, which have found that acupuncture is safe when performed by appropriately trained practitioners" (Few serious adverse events reported in pediatric acupuncture studies AAP News 2012; 33:3 2)
